But they still did not understand
Jesus's focus was not to teach the people of His time to rebel against Rome. Because He understood that Rome was only a thought pattern designed by the world; an idea to see oneself as a god. But it was the wrong lens. This is why Jesus appeared in the flesh, to be the lens through which mankind would look to see themselves through the eyes of God. He would become the way to this Inner realization, He would become this truth revealed when man would see Him outwardly first (because the outwardly was the only language these people understood); and it was He would become the life of God hidden within man before the ages. This is the mystery of God! That is why He said "Matthew 11:28
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Why rest? Because He knew that whatever they were looking for (even when their intentions were to seek God's) became a burden and this made them weary because they ended up with nothing. So, when He appeared to them in the flesh, it was not because He boasted that He was God's Son, but because He needed to become this "Word of God" unto man that related with their way of thinking, interpretation and only when they'd see Him, they might see the Father. But they still did not understand, that's why His death would mean the death of their search for God outside of themselves and they would finally look within and find Him. They would finally look within and see this fully present Divine nature already within them; the Kingdom of God.
